Shipping containers are strong, modular, easily moved, and are something that we have a lot of. They are something that are very flexible and can have any number of uses once they are done being used as shipping containers. They are also I think seen as a good material to reuse because of the negative press long distance shipping has gotten (although from a carbon standpoint, it’s a pretty efficient way to move things).
There is a demand because we have so many of them. The US imports a lot more than we export, which means an excess of shipping containers. Using them to build things is a clever way to recycle the containers while clearing up some space.
