Why is there such debate over whether tomatoes are fruits or vegetables?

It’s basically the taste.  Tomatoes are technically fruits biologically because they have seeds, but they do not taste sweet.  This has led people to the notion that tomatoes are actually vegetables.  Interestingly enough, this debate went to the Supreme Court in 1883 in the case of Nix vs. Hedden.  In the end, they decided that tomatoes were a vegetable, even though botanically it is a fruit.
