Why is there so much oil in the middle east?

Oil is indeed formed from the fossils of aquatic creatures.  While the prehistoric Tethys Sea is the reason for an abundance of oil in the Middle East, this same idea is behind the abundance of reserves accessible by offshore drilling into the ocean floor.  Many countries are therefore pushing for development of their offshore oil extraction infrastructure.  It has been estimated that these offshore reserves could rival what is currently extracted on land in Saudi Arabia.  The technical risks of these ventures, however, came to the fore with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico this past year.
