The Gold Rush did produce 125 million troy ounces of gold, but 80% of the gold in the California is still in the ground. Ecological forces that were active over hundreds of millions of years ago resulted in the large concentration of gold in California. Concentration is important, because that is the only way to extract gold. 400 million years ago when California was under a large ocean. Mineral like gold built up along the seafloor. After a series of volcanic eruptions and coolings the veins of gold formed within fields of quartz. It is actually China, as of 2007, surpassed African countries as the country producing the most gold.
