Bagged salads tend to contain more bacteria because the lettuce is cut up in the field, where it is more likely to come in contact with contaminants from the soil. Bagged salads are also made up of greens from different sources: if one head of lettuce is contaminated it will spread bacteria to the lettuce it is mixed with.
Consumer Reports recommends the following steps to protect yourself:
-Buy packages as far from their use-by date as possible
-Even if the lettuce bag says “pre-washed”, wash the lettuce thoroughly yourself
-Keep the greens away from raw meat to avoid contamination
