Why is there opposition to high speed rail projects?

Republican governors feel that the projects may be a waste of taxpayers dollars because they produce “little or no return on investment to the state” and could have continuing maintenance costs on the taxpayers’ backs. They also feel the projects are springing up in an unnecessary number of places, and they should only be built where they would be the absolute most beneficial.
