Lead compounds were used as pigments in paints for many years (most frequently in white and yellow paints). Toxicity aside, lead has many benefits for paint, including durability, water resistance, and coverage (since lead is very opaque, you need less of it to sufficiently cover a surface). Lead in paint in the US is rare these days, as it has been banned since the 1970s, but it can still sometimes be found in old homes.
