Why is the Taj Mahal in India threatened by pollution?

The Taj Mahal’s white marble surface makes it particularly susceptible to the industrial pollution happening around it. Currently in India, there are groups of environmentalists who are trying to limit the amount of pollution around the beautiful structure. Yet, some members of the Indian government argue that creating jobs (Which can involve pollution) is more important. Tourism is another reason why the Taj Mahal is threatened by pollution. Preservationists are trying to figure out how to keep it a tourist attraction without ruining the structure.
