Why is the land surrounding river deltas sinking?

The land surrounding river deltas is sinking because of natural and human causes. Naturally, rivers will carry sediments out to the ocean with them. The place they drop these sediments is the river delta and floodplain. Naturally, rivers will compact these sediments and carry some particles further out to sea, which will cause the river delta to sink. When men build dams, levees, and reservoirs, it causes rivers to take the sediments further beyond the flood plain. By extracting natural gas and groundwater, we cause the sediments to compact more rapidly, thus causing the river deltas to sink.
