Why is sulfur common near volcanoes?

It is common because it is spewed from the volcano. You can easily find sulfur near older volcanoes, because sulfur is usually spewed from a volcano during the latter part of the eruption cycle. Sulfur can also be found near hot springs and other geothermal/volcanic spots.
