Why is energy such a big deal to environmentalists?

We use energy all the time.  Whether it be petroleum or electricity, the generation process of either is most detrimental to the environment.  The majority of negative environmental impact is derived from fuel and energy production.  The means of extracting fossil fuels require procedures that mean destruction of land on which fossil fuels are based and further carbon emission.  Current electricity production is centered around burning coal and petroleum to provide the steam for electricity generating turbines.  All aspects of the average person’s daily lives require some use of energy, which means that countries will always demand energy.  Environmentalists are simply concerned with the development of a energy production system that does not pose any significant harm to Earth.
