Why is runoff such a bad thing?

Runoff water eventually ends up in our clean water supply — lakes, reservoirs, and groundwater. Because of all the industrial chemicals we use today, runoff often gets contaminated before it reaches its final destination. Additionally, decomposing material and chemicals that sit in a landfill leach onto rainwater that runs off from landills. Our drinking water supplies are vulnerable to contamination from runoff.
