Why is stress so damaging to someone’s health?

The human body has a natural stress response which is intended to temporarily protect the body from harm. For example, one of the responses is to constrict blood flow in the body under stress. The reason was likely based on limiting the possibility of bleeding to death when attacked.

Unfortunately, we are now being exposed to stressors that may not threaten our physical well being, but the response in our body is the same, and over long periods can cause all kinds of health problems. For example, the constricting of blood flow can lead to stroke or heart problems.
