Apparently the Spanish government used to subsidize the industry, quite heavily actually, however they have recently cut back and there is now concern that the industry might collapse. In 2008 they accounted for half the wattage produced by solar power in the world, but thanks to the global financial crisis the Spanish government can no longer support them. This is also bad news for producers of solar power components, as demand has severely dropped. There are some in the US who have used this story to argue against the US similarly sponsoring solar and other clean energies, as there is a worry it will create a speculative bubble.
