The different colors of smoke are caused by different types of combustion. The more elemental carbon dioxide is released into the air, the darker the smoke will appear. Hot fires will usually convert a greater percentage of their fuel into elemental carbon; these carbon particles absorb light and make the smoke appear black. Cooler fires do not convert as much of their fuel into carbon, and therefore their smoke appears less black because it does not have as many light absorbing particles.
