Why is some sand more gritty than others?

It basically depends on the size and composition of the sand. The typical categories based on the size of grains of sand (in the U.S.) are as follows: very fine sand (11618 mm diameter), fine sand (18 mm – 14 mm), medium sand (14 mm – 12 mm), coarse sand (12 mm – 1 mm), and very coarse sand (1 mm – 2 mm).

Sand can be derived from a variety of rocks, from quartz to limestone to gypsum, etc.
