Specifically “jealousy” is about fear of losing something you want very much.
“Hate” isn’t the same thing, and it can be also be motivated by other things. One who hates may fear another person. And that fear might be justified! But the hate is considered by many religions and philosophies, in many situations, to be unproductive.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is generally making reference to this when he warns Luke not to “give in to the Dark Side”. It’s a popularized way of referring to a general problem people have.
Often people who hate are struggling with their emotions, and want to be better, more in control. So it pays to a little sympathetic and understanding.
