Elements such as cobalt, gold, lead, copper, and uranium cause the variations in color among glasses. Many of these elements are added purposefully during vitrification (glass-making) in order to create different effects (stained glass, for example).
Glass can be manufactured in any color you want. It just needs something to pigment it. There’s also green, red, yellow and so on. I know people who go out of their way to collect glass from many specific colors.
