Why is some fog thicker than other fog?

Fog is defined as a cloud that is in direct contact with the ground.  A visibility reduction to 1km is the defining cutoff point in the distinction between fog and mist.  There are several different types of fog.  Radiation fog is condensation from cooling of the ground after a sunset.  Advection fog is typically a product of moist warm air encountering a colder surface such as snow or water.  The fog’s thickness depends mostly on altitude and air pressure.
