Soil is a very complex material made of lots of different kinds of materials. In substances like this, “lightness” or “darkness” is largely a matter of the material’s reflectivity and the color of its components. Soil is mostly made of small pieces of rock and decomposing matter. These materials are typically very granular, non-reflective, and dark in color, and so soil in general is also very dark in color.
That depends on the kind of soil. Healthy soils tend to be dark because they are rich with organic matter. Dead soil, otherwise known as dirt, is devoid of nutrients and organic matter so it is no longer useful for cultivation. The color of the soil is an indicator of its fertility, so in this case darker tends to be better.
