why is soda called soda pop?

The origin of the term pop is probably the popping noise made when drinks were dispensed from old soda fountains.[citation 1]

Pop is actually the accepted term in much of the nation rather than soda, and other regions refer to the beverage generically as “coke”. Using “soda” marks you as likely from the northeast, California, or the area immediately surrounding St. Louis. [citation 2]
