Why should you put baking soda on kitchen fires?

    You should throw baking soda on kitchen fires because it effectively smothers the fire.  Unlike other powders like flour (which is easily combustible), baking soda produces carbon dioxide when heated.  Fires need to feed on oxygen, so by throwing the baking soda on the fire it deprives the fire of oxygen and thus puts out the fire.
