The Boardman plant is basically the reason why the area from Mount Hood to the Columbia River Gorge to Hells Canyon has smog and haze problems, reducing visibility. Shutting the plant down will drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Although the plant claims that it’s trying to be as efficient as possible, its emissions are well over what they should be.
The Boardman coal plant is the only remaining coal powered plant and is the single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the state. The closure of this plant would significantly lower the amount of green house gas emission for this plant accounts for 65% of stationary SO2 emissions, 35% of NOx emissions, and 7% of CO2 emissions in Oregon.
