Why is renewable energy thought to be important for US national security?

It is vital for U.S. national security because if are unable to develop renewable energy of our own, we will have to rely on the resources of other nations for fuels like petroleum and risk being in a state of debt and dependence to those countries. This is the main reason why the U.S. navy recently purchased huge amounts of algae-based fuels — for political reasons.

Renewable energy is an issue of national security to ensure the United States does not become dependent on any other country for something as important as energy. We already get most of our oil from the Middle East and Venezuela; we need to start supporting our own country. China already has bought out most of the United States debt; we need to start standing on our own two feet again. It could be dangerous if we are dependent on an OPEC.
