Why is PVC so bad for the environment?

There are quite a few reasons.  During the manufacturing of PVC, the main components (vinyl chloride monomer, dioxin, other pollutants) are emitted into the air, water, and land.  During use, PVC products can leach toxic additives, such as phthalates (when PVC is used in flooring materials).  When PVC is put into a landfill, it can also leach toxic additives, and when it is burned in an incinerator, PVC emits dioxin and heavy metals.
