The Prius has a reputation as a “green” car because it is currently the most fuel-efficient vehicle sold on a large scale in the United States, meaning that it can travel further than other cars on a gallon of gasoline, and contributes less to global warming for every mile driven. The hybrid Prius can travel about 50 miles on a gallon of gas in the city, and slightly less on the highway. For comparison, a similarly sized non-hybrid car might get about 25 miles per gallon in the city, and 35 on the highway. However, it’s important to keep in mind that just because a Prius pollutes less than other cars, does not mean it doesn’t pollute, or that it does not have a negative impact on the environment. It’s great to buy a Prius or other fuel-efficient car if you can afford one, but it’s always best to minimize the amount of driving you do, and public transportation is always a greener choice than driving any car – even the Prius.
