The Pika is becoming endangered in large part due to the effects of climate change. The threat is an increase in the temperature over the range of areas the Pika’s live. The US Fish and Wildlife Department has however determined that they will not become endangered for the short-term foreseeable future. It has been determined that the ecosystemic shifts will not be enough to threaten the species and they should be able to handle the temperature changes in their native environments.
Research suggests that American pikas may be the first North American mammal to fall victim to global warming. Global warming is thought to have contributed to local extinction of pikas in The Great Basin area. In February 2010 the American pika was denied endangered species protection, but currently pikas are receiving another opportunity for CESA protection.
