Why is peak oil such a bad thing?

Peak oil refers to the point in time when the maximum rate of petroleum extraction has been reached, and after that the rate of production enters a terminal decline. This is only a negative event because the world has become so dependent up on petroleum. If alternative materals and fuels can be found, the decline may slow down and we may even be able to end our depenedence.
