There are two important “Pascals” in history. Blaise Pascal, a French scientist and philosopher who lived in the 1600s, made very significant contributions to mechanical calculators, the study of fluids, the concepts of pressure and vaccuum, projective geometry, and probability theory. Pascal is also a type of programming language published in 1970, and is named after the philosopher. Pascal was initially used to teach undergraduate students structural programming. It has served as the basis for other programs used in research, PC gaming, and embedded systems. Pascal was also the primary language used in the early development of Apple products, and is still used for applications such as Skype.
