The problem is palm oil serves both as food and as an emerging biofuel/biodiesel fuel.  Rainforest in Indonesia and Malaysia has been cleared to make way for this lucrative crop, damaging habitats and increasing greenhouse gas emissions, as well as removing an important carbon sink.

One main argument against it, which is reasonable, is that the environmental impact of clearing the rainforest and producing the oil for biofuel is worse than any benefit derived from using the biofuel.

Whole Foods has pledged to boycott any unsustainable palm oil in any products it sells.  The Rainforest Action Network (RAN) applauded this decision, which is both an ethical one and one that raises awareness.
