The ozone layer in the atmosphere block ultraviolet light from strike the Earth. Though some ultraviolet light is needed for the production of vitamin D in humans too much can have a devastating effect on skin cells. Too much exposure to UV rays has been linked with a prevalence of skin cancer and other diseases. In places where the ozone has been depleted people must use sun block with SPF over 50 to avoid these problems.
The ozone layer protects living organisms from ultraviolet rays from the sun, UV-B rays. These are harmful to many, but not all, of the species in the Earth’s environment.
