A study at the University of Buffalo has shown that orange juice can be beneficial to diabetics due to its high level of flavonoids. Oxygen free radicals, which can damage cells and lead to disease, are suppressed by these flavinoids. The study compaired the effects of fructose (which orange juice contains) and glucose on diabetic participants. Those who consumed fructose had much lower free radical levels than those who consumed glucose.
A person goes into diabetic shock when her blood sugar levels are dangerously low. Many diabetics like to keep sugary beverages like orange juice around them at all times just in case they need an immediate blood sugar boost. My diabetic friends have used orange juice, tubes of cupcake icing, and even small sugar packets as quick blood sugar boosters.
