Paint is composed of 1. Pigment, 2. Binder, 3. Solvent, and 4. Additives. The Pigment, provides the acutal color of the paint. The Binder, binds the paint together. The Solvent or Liquid, provides the desired consistency of the paint. Additives, are ingrediants that provide the paint with various properties, such as mildew resistence, improved pigment stability, etc.

Old paint was originially composed of various VOC’s, Volatile Organic Compounds, which can significantly effect the environment and human health.

Note: Lead-based paint was a major health issue and was considered to be the “number one environmental threat to the health of children in the United States”–Secretary of Department of Human and Health Resources, 1991.

Health effects from high levels of lead-based paint include convulsions, coma, and even death. Lower levels can adversely affect the central nervous sytem, kidneys, and mental development.
