Why is nitrogen release in our atmosphere so bad?

Nitrogen released into the air as N2O (nitrous oxide) has almost 300 times the global warming potential of an equivalent amount of CO2 over a 100 year period. So very little nitrous oxide can have huge effects on climate change.

“Nitrous oxide has now become the largest ozone-depleting substance emitted through human activities, and is expected to remain the largest throughout the 21st century, NOAA scientists say in a new study” (Science Daily). Ozone is vital for protecting life on Earth from harmful UV rays. Like CO2, N20 also acts as a greenhouse gas. In excessive amounts it traps heat in our atmosphere and contributes to global warming.
