It is one of the greener cities mostly because of elements inherent to cities: high-density, mixed-use housing in areas that are walkable, bikeable and serviced by public transportation. When everyone lives close to each other and transportation emissions and energy is relatively low (compared to suburban areas where every adult has his or her own car), it is automatically “greener”. Currently, the city has the biggest diesel-hybrid and compressed natural gas bus fleet and has many hybrid taxis. City offices and public housing must use the most energy-efficient tools available. Green building is on the rise, recycling is decent and the urban culture has fostered a sustainable, local, green mentality that supports farmers markets and environmental initiatives.
