why is my maple tree dropping its leaves in July

This is usually due to drought, a sudden change in temperature, or insects.  If it’s due to an insect infestation, most trees fully recover.  If it’s the result of a drought (or over-fertilizing or over-watering in the spring), the tree may have sustained serious root damage.  Try scraping back a bit of the bark.  If you see green tissue, your tree is still alive.  It’s best to call an arborist to have them inspect your tree to ensure that a disease is not spreading to other trees.
