The caps are very difficult to break down and recycle. They are a much harder plastic than the bottles they are on, and they can’t be easily collapsed like the bottles. They can actually damage the equipment. Capless bottles can also allow the bottle to dry out completely.
it’s also labor intensive to remove the caps from all the bottles, and not all recycling plants are equipped with machines capable of doing it.
