This is because the mileage calculation on electric cars is an inexact science and varies from user to user. A user who only uses their vehicles for short commutes and never takes trips over 3 hours long in their vehicle would have a much higher mpg rating than someone who owns an electric vehicle and uses it for cross country roadtrips. This is because the gasoline engine only kicks in after the car has been running for a certain amount of time. Therefore, companies can give themselves very generous estimates on fuel efficiency and have often been criticized for not telling the whole story.
