Why is McDonalds criticized by environmentalists?

One major criticism is that they package their sweet iced tea drink in styrofoam containers which are not recyclable. Styrofoam containers are made of styrene, which can attack tissues and the nervous system and is absorbed through the skin, intestines, and lungs. These containers can take up to 900 years to degrade in a landfill, while paper cups coated with polyethylene or wax only take somewhere over a year to break down.

There are many problems with McDonald’s from a environmetalist point of view. One is that environmentalists promote organic and local food, whereas McDonald’s food is not locally sourced, but it is overly processed with chemicals and non-whole foods. There is also the whole packaging that is related to any fast food restaurant like McDonalds. Think about the containers the food comes in, the bag, the cups, napkins, and all the other waste. For more on the unhealthy and unsustainable nature of McDonalds, I highly recomend Don’t Eat This Book by Morgan Spurlock.
