Many of the items used in making plastics are toxic; though some of these, like phosgene (toxic gas once used as a weapon of war), were once used scientists are discovering ways to make plastic without so many harmful chemicals.
The manufacturing of plastics and rubbers result in three major areas of pollution: Solid Wastes, waster water, and air emissions, managing to cover the whole sea, land, air combo of pollution. Air pollution is released during the heating and adding of various polymers, when volatile organic compounds are released, while the water pollution is created by effluents that are washed away from the finished product. And the non-biodegradable plastics are themselves solid waste. For more specifics, please check page 9 and on of the attached link.
I hope this helped!
