Why is leather so bad for the environment?

Turning skin to leather uses a lot of chemicals. Chemicals keep skin from going rotten and they are incredibly damaging to the environment. Also, industrial animal production is one of the biggest energy wasting procedures in America so more leather means more animals. There are many leather alternatives and pseudo-leather materials meaning that it shouldn’t be too difficult to try and wean people off of leather if they’re aware of the toll that it takes.
