Why is it so bad to throw batteries in the trash?

Each year approximately 84,000 tons of batteries are added to our nation’s landfills.  The substances encased inside alkaline batteries are very dangerous and harmful.  During use, humans never come in contact with the contents of the battery, but once they are in landfills the casing can be crushed or degraded.  This exposes mercury and other harmful toxins into the environment.
