The refrigerator coils, located on the back of the machine, tend to heat up. In order to avoid overheating there should be enough airflow reaching the back of the fridge. Many times the fridge is placed underneath cabinetry, so in this case it is especially advised not to put things on top of the fridge, however if there isn’t anything above it, and there is sufficient airflow, putting something on top should not be a problem.
