Paint is a solvent that is considered a hazardous household product. They are safe when they are used for what they are made for, but can become harmful to the environment when they accumulate in non-targeted areas. When you pour paint down the drain or flush it down the toilet, the hazardous materials enter into the septic system and run the risk of polluting soil and groundwater. Sewage treatment facilities are unfortunately not capable of removing toxic substances (Free Drinking Water, 2011).
