Cities need parks for many reasons. Residents often don’t have the chance to leave the city, and staying connected to the rest of nature is critical if one is to remain committed to protecting the environment. Being among trees gives many people a sense of peace, and relieves stress. Large parks, like the 5,000 acre Forest Park in Portland, Oregon also act as a city’s lungs, helping produce oxygen as well as take in carbon dioxide produced at high levels by human activity in cities. People who lead sedentary lifestyles in the city need exercise, and many parks provide hiking trails, bike trails, and other sports amenities.
