I would say the most important reason is air pollution. Millions of cars around the world release carbon monoxide, for which is not very kind to anyone’s lungs. The more Westernized countries have smog regulation laws in place to cut down on these emissions, but much of the world does not care, making those areas more polluted. I believe Mexico City, Mexico still holds the record for being the worst place in the world for smog. When carbon monoxide builds up in high quantities like this, it can be deadly when exposed over time. Also, the “greenhouse gases” that are released are associated with global warming, making it hotter around the world than it used to be. Alternative fuels that have almost none or zero effect on the environment would be the ultimate goal, drastically cutting the amount of poisonous gases pumped into the air.
