Why is it good to raise your foot when you sprain your ankle?

Its good because you reduce the blood flow to the area wen you raise it. You want to reduce the blood flow because you don’t want it to swell up and obviously, if it is a higher grade sprain, you want to reduce the internal bleeding.

As always though, if you feel there is something very wrong go to the hospital.  Better safe than sorry.

It is harder for the heart  to pump blood against gravity (e.g. above the heart), which reduces the rate of blood flow and so can reduce swelling. So if you elevate your ankle (or any other body part that is bleeding or swelling) it helps to raise it above your heart. Lying down with pillows under your ankle works well for sprains.
