The brain begins to swell, causing the person to feel sleepy and making it difficult to stay awake. If a person does fall asleep they may not wake up again, which is why it is sometimes dangerous to fall asleep after a concussion.
It is not needed to keep a person awake after they have had a concussion. This used to be common practice to see if the person’s behavior has changed. It is okay to let them sleep, but you should see a doctor if you have a concussion and do as your doctors say.
It is correct that it is not always necessary to keep a person awake after they have had a concussion. In fact, the CDC actually recommends getting plenty of rest after a concussion in order to help you recover. However, it appears that whether one should go to sleep or not immediately after a concussion depends on the severity of the injury. If a person cannot be woken from sleep, then the concussion is probably more severe. If a person can easily be woken from sleep, then the concussion is probably less severe. Therefore, it is always advisable to see your doctor in the event of a concussion and follow the advice he or she recommends.
