Why is it called stainless steel?

It is called stainless steel because the metal is a rust resistant alloy made from 10% chromium. The chromium it contains allows the metal to form a corrosion resistant chromium oxide compound on the surface. If the compount were to be removed, another one would just form in its place as long as oxygen was also present.
