Why is it called a compost pile when everything in it decomposes?

It is a pile for awhile till things begin to break down (weeks to months), and then it is a pile of soil. Would you prefer a “decompost pile”? 🙂 The dictionary definition of “compost” is a composition or compound, which is essnetially what a compost pile is- a mixture of scraps into one place.
